LONDON (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry kicked off his first official overseas trip by meeting Monday with British leaders in London, the first leg of a hectic nine-country dash through Europe and the Middle East.
Kerry's first diplomatic meeting abroad came with British Prime Minister David Cameron, where they discussed the prospects of a free trade agreement between the United States and the European Union and the importance of the Middle East peace process.
Cameron's spokesman, Jean-Christophe Gray, said the prime minister and Kerry also "reiterated their shared determination to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran" ahead of talks between world leaders and Tehran in Almaty, Kazakhstan, this week.
The two also spoke about the challenges posed by fragile states such as Syria, Libya and Egypt, the spokesman added.
Later, Kerry is expected to discuss the Falkland Islands with U.K. Foreign Secretary William Hague before flying to Germany for meetings in Berlin.
Kerry arrived on London late Sunday as the Obama administration launched a frantic effort to try to salvage a Syrian opposition conference that Kerry plans to attend this week in Rome. Some members of the sharply divided Syrian Opposition Council are threatening to boycott the meeting.
After lots of leaks, rumors and outright company?forecasts,? Samsung today announced the Galaxy Note 8.0, an 8-inch iPad Mini competitor. The 1280?800 pixel display will have a slightly better PPI of 189 than the Mini and match camera specs and a quad core processor. Samsung?s Note 8.0 will also double up the Mini with 2GB of RAM and add an S-Pen for those who need/want it as well as expandable storage via the Micro-SD card slot. Just like the Galaxy Tab 7 2 it has an IR blaster with a rebranded Peel station navigation. On the down side, it won?t have LTE (only HSPA+) and it will run a slightly out-dated 4.1.2 version of Android Jelly Bean. It also weighs almost an ounce more than the iPad Mini.
Oh and it can make calls like a huge phone.
Will this go head to head against the Mini? My gut reaction is no. Samsung?s Touchwiz overlay and pen will keep these out of the hands of mainstream users. No price or launch date is yet planned but the specs tell me (720P TFT display) that Samsung is aiming for a low price. I?d expect to see this at $250 in the US probably just after it launches in the 2nd quarter in a number of Asian and EU territories.

What's striking is the absence of triumphalism -- Bigelow doesn't shy away from showing the victims shot down in cold blood in the compound -- and we come away with the overwhelming sense that this has been a grim, dark episode in our history.
Chastain makes Maya as vivid as a bloodshot eye. Her porcelain skin, delicate features and feminine attire belie the steel within.
No doubt Zero Dark Thirty serves a function by airing America's dirty laundry about detainee and torture programs, but in its wake, there's a crying need for a compassionate Coming Home to counter its brutal Deer Hunter.
While "Zero Dark Thirty" may offer political and moral arguing points aplenty, as well as vicarious thrills,as a film it's simply too much of a passable thing.
From the very first scenes of Zero Dark Thirty, director Kathryn Bigelow demonstrates why she is such a formidable filmmaker, as adept with human emotion as with visceral, pulse-quickening action.
A timely and important reminder of the agonizing human price of zealotry.
Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal shape history -- those breaks, big and small, that led to the killing of Osama bin Laden -- into one of the finest fact-based thrillers since "All the President's Men."
Purely as cinematic exercise, Zero Dark Thirty is an exhilarating piece of work. But, beyond its for-the-times subject matter, the work does not linger whatsoever.
Zero Dark Thirty is interesting as opposed to enjoyable, intriguing as opposed to entertaining, and certainly less memorable than The Hurt Locker.
It's quite remarkable how Bigelow and Boal managed to take 12 years of information (including a conclusion that everyone knows) and packaged it into a coherent, intimate and intense movie.
We know the ending, yet remain mesmerized by familiar details, filmed with a harrowing sense of urgency. It's as close to being in the White House situation room that night, watching a closed-circuit broadcast, as anyone could expect.
The second half of the film IS the film.
Whereas Locker was less about war than what it is to have a death wish, ZDT is less about the suspenseful true-life search for Osama bin Laden than the red tape one woman must wade through to prove that a mean old bastard is living in suburban Pakistan.
Bigelow's great achievement is stripping down the action from the exaggerated theatrics in movies and television shows so the missions feel no less exciting and immediate.
One of the finest movies of the year is a thriller about the tracking and, finally, slaying of Osama bin Laden.
There is no Team America-style, flag-waving bravado behind this story - it is quite the opposite.
Bigelow has created the best film of 2012.
"Zero Dark Thirty" is less a celebration how terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden was found and killed than an engrossing examination of why it took a decade to deal with him.
Following on from the great acclaim of The Hurt Locker, Bigalow's shaky cam and tough talking characters once again take us to the dark side of modern warfare.
In the absence of cinematic grandeur and didacticism, we're left as empty and as lost as Chastain's agent as she boards a symbolically empty plane for an uncertain future. Just what are we to think of the so-called War on Terror?
The viewer needs to stay sharp to stay on top of the details of the labyrinthine search, but Bigelow tackles the complex story with the same muscular urgency and incisive intelligence that won her an Oscar for The Hurt Locker.
Exhilarating cinema that makes you want to forget all the questionable issues of representation that have come before it.
This is a fascinating film, and Chastain's wonderful performance has something in it of the tragic sense of life.

Digital Diary: Are We Suffering From Mobile App Burnout? | The New York Times
Back when the new Iowa State football facility was just concrete and steel beams, Cyclone coach Paul Rhoads showed it to Aaron Wimberly.
Rhoads brought Wimberly into a large, unfinished room. He asked the running back what he thought it was.
Wimberly assumed it was the indoor football practice facility.
?We were standing in the current weight room,? Rhoads said.
Wimberly is now going through offseason workouts in the space. He?s one of four early enrollees from the 2013 recruiting class already on campus.
And the new $20 million facility, which ISU moved into in November, played a role why each became a Cyclone.
?I could really picture what it was,? Wimberly said. ?When I came on my visit it was actually what he said it was and I liked it.?
Wimberly, from Iowa Western Community College, plans to play right away. He rushed for 1,125 yards and 13 touchdowns, while earning All-American honors, this past season.
The 5-foot-11 scatback figures to contribute in the backfield, the slot and possibly as a returner. But he knows it won?t happen if he doesn?t make the most of this winter and spring, where he?ll do all of his work in the new football facility.
?It?s more than you could ask for,? Wimberly said.
The 155,000 square foot facility, which was built into the current indoor practice facility, is equipped with everything a football team would need to succeed.
There are video rooms to review tape. There is a state of the art athletic training and rehab center.
But the crown jewel is the 11,000 square foot weight room.
It played a role in why Arizona Western Community College tight end E.J. Bibbs is on campus.
?That weight room is awesome,? Bibbs said. ?You go in there and take a peak at it. It gets your eyes a little bit.?
Bibbs, who was a second-team All-American in 2012, stuck with ISU despite a late recruiting push from Oklahoma. Like Wimberly, he hopes to make an impact this fall.
A month into his ISU career, Bibbs is trying to adjust to the Cyclone workout program.
?It?s kind of tough,? Bibbs said, ?but you get through it and it?s all mental. You got to get used to it.?
Offensive lineman Shawn Curtis expects to spend plenty of time in the weight room. Even though Rivals.com rates him as the third-best prospect in ISU?s 2013 class, Curtis knows most linemen redshirt right away.
Curtis, from Orlando, Fla., is 6-foot-5, 270-pounds. Rhoads expects him to top the 300-pound mark. Curtis arrived a semester early to get a jump start on adding some weight.
?I want to gain as much muscle mass as I can and be as fast as I can by spring time,? Curtis said.
The entire facility might come in the handiest for Orlando, Fla. linebacker Alton Meeks. The freshman spent more time in high school as a quarterback than a linebacker.
He can watch film with defensive coordinator Wally Burnham to learn the position. He can head out to the indoor field with fellow linebackers to get versed in his technique.
In the short time he?s been around the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Meeks has already learned that his days as a quarterback will help him out on defense.
?I was with (linebacker) Jeremiah George,? Meeks said, ?he was talking about something and I was like I understand why you do that because (it was the counter to what you would try) on offense.?
Ads pegged to Google search results can be racially biased because of how certain names are associated with blacks or whites, according to a new study.
Harvard University professor Latanya Sweeney found "statistically significant discrimination" when comparing ads served with results from online searches made using names associated with blacks and those with whites.
The study contrasted online searches using names such as "Ebony" and "DeShawn," with those such as "Jill" and "Geoffrey."
Ads posted alongside search results for names likely to belong to blacks tended to suggest criminal activity with offers along the lines of background checks for arrests, according to the study.
Searches using white-sounding names prompted results with neutral ads, the Sweeney's research indicated.
The findings raise "questions as to whether Google's advertising technology exposes racial bias in society and how ad and search technology can develop to assure racial fairness," Sweeney said in a blog post.
Advertisers bid on terms, or key words, with high bidders getting their ads posted alongside corresponding search results. Google defends the process as race-neutral, saying outcomes are driven by decisions by advertisers.
The study dated last week was funded in part by the National Science Foundation and a grant from Google.
Are you an Xbox 360 owner? You might like this bit of news: according to Major Nelson, Redbox Instant is coming sometime to the gaming machine in the "very near future," and Microsoft appears to have partnered with the video streaming service to become a console launch exclusive. It'll be available only to users who are Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Of course, this doesn't mean this will be the only place you'll be able to take advantage of all that Redbox will have to offer; the public launch, which is still slated for Q1, will be available on several platforms and devices, such as iOS / Android, Vizio, LG, Samsung and even Google TV. As a refresher, you'll be able to get unlimited access to the service (as well as four free DVD rentals) for $8 per month, while an extra dollar will let you convert those discs into Blu-ray.
Despite the launch of major new devices like the Droid DNA, One X+ and Windows Phone 8X, HTC's revenues and profits fell once again in the final quarter of 2012. Today the company reported fourth-quarter revenues of NT$60 billion, or $2.03 billion U.S. (down from NT$70.2 billion in Q3), with gross margin of 23% and operating margin of 1% (down from 25% and 7% respectively). Net profit and EPS (earnings per share) also fell, the former from NT$3.9 billion to NT$1 billion, and the latter from NT$4.7 to NT$1.21.
HTC expects things to get worse in the first quarter of 2013, predicting Q1 revenue in the NT$50-60 billion range, with a gross profit margin between 21 and 23% and operating margins between 0.5 and 1.0%.
Despite the grim outlook, HTC CEO Peter Chou is optimistic about the company's prospects in 2013 --
“We continue to focus on the most important element of our business: innovation,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC. “Our teams are delivering beautifully designed phones, containing the newest technological advancements. Outstanding products, paired with improvements in our marketing execution and overall readiness give us reason to feel optimistic about the progress we will make in 2013.”
That progress, if it comes, will start with the launch of the company's first major Android phones of the year, rumored to be a 4.7-inch, 1080p device codenamed "M7," and a 4.3-inch 720p phone known as "M4." HTC has scheduled press conferences in London and New York City for Feb. 19, just ahead of Mobile World Congress, and we'll learn more at those events.
PC gamers of a certain age will have very fond memories of the Commander Keen series -- usually trying to pogo toward a hard-to-reach gem or frantically escaping a Dopefish. Key creator Tom Hall and his startup Pieces of Fun may be playing our heartstrings like a fiddle, then, by launching a crowdfunding drive for the Keen series' spiritual successor, Secret Spaceship Club. Along with reintroducing the core sci-fi platform hopping we know so well, the game will include its own editor to let players build their own masterpieces. Newcomers just wanting to whip up a quick map should get a simple mode with easy drawing and visual, cause-and-effect scripting; those with some coding chops will have access to an advanced mode that lets them customize the scripting for objects, cutscenes and even the win conditions. We'll have the option to publish maps for the world to see, and the results should be playable on a swath of platforms that include Android tablets, iPads, Macs and PCs running either Ubuntu Linux or Windows.
It's an ambitious plan, and Hall's development house would like to raise $400,000 by March 1st to make Secret Spaceship Club a reality by February 2014. There's perks for jumping in early, however, such as becoming an in-game character. Anyone who's still trying to learn whether or not aliens ate their babysitter will want to at least swing by the source link.
